As a first-generation Hungarian American living in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, I have a strong affinity and connection to the city’s neighborhood of Hazelwood. For most of my life, I’ve stayed rooted in my family’s European heritage through my relationship with Hungarian organizations in the area. Historian and founder of the Greater Hazelwood Historical Society of Pittsburgh, JaQuay Edward Carter, has also felt this steady loss. As a former Hazelwoodian himself, JaQuay believes the neighborhood’s history deserves to be held onto. Moved by his passion for the preservation of the dying community so close to my heart, I knew I had to capture his story to show the importance of his work. Through the filmmaking process, I formed a personal relationship with JaQuay, sharing our memories of local landmarks and cultural hubs while weathering wintry conditions for the duration of filming. I hope this film encourages its viewers to seek reverence for their own communities, and confidently look towards the future.
